Since 2012, the national "Family Business Award" has annually honoured an "exemplary family business that has distinguished itself through above-average and sustainable entrepreneurial action." It was donated by Amag on the occasion of the 100th birthday of company founder Walter Haefner (1910-2012) and has achieved an enviable reputation throughout Switzerland. Once again, many prominent politicians and business figures are expected to attend the award ceremony on 25 September in Bern. What is special is that, after the Bolliger company last year, a Grenchen family firma is once again in the final: the company Ryf Mikro skopie und Metrologie. It is, of course, no stranger to Grenchen, with its headquarters in the time-honoured Löwen building, which it has owned since 2003. It rarely makes headlines in the daily press unless it is celebrating a company anniversary - another one (60 years) is due in 2025.

... and welcome to the world of Ryf AG. Since 1965 we have dedicated ourselves
heart and soul to microscopy. During this time, the family business has grown continuously
and has become the market leader in the fields of microscopy and optical
microscopy and optical measuring systems.

Environmental standard ISO 14001

Since 2023, Grenchen-based Ryf AG, which specialises in microscopy and optical measurement systems, has been one of around 300,000 companies worldwide to be certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 environmental standard. This international standard defines the requirements for an environmental management system that improves the company's environmental performance and achieves specific environmental goals. The standard is based on the four pillars of planning, implementation, control and improvement.
In order to fulfil the requirements of ISO 14001, we have implemented numerous measures in recent years. In addition to some "big chunks", it is often small and very small changes which, taken together, have a positive impact on Ryf AG's environmental balance sheet.
Here are a few examples from the recent past:

. Solar system on the production building with 86 panels of 415W each
. Roofs at both sites insulated in accordance with Minergie P
. Triple glazing on the factory building
. Controlled shock ventilation/digital air quality monitoring .
. More than 60 PC screens replaced by energy-saving models .
. Energy-saving printers of the latest generation
. Use of two BMW electric vehicles for short journeys .
. Use of state-of-the-art diesel vehicles for long journeys .
. Four delivery vans of the latest diesel generation
. Charging stations supplied directly with solar power
. Bicycle room for employees, with charging station for e-bikes
. Office and staircase lighting completely converted to LED
. Massive reduction in PET waste thanks to Quooker water system
. Glass bottles and washable drinking glasses in use .
. Coffee machine with organic coffee beans (no plastic or aluminium waste)
. Consistent waste separation of cardboard, PET, steel, aluminium, brass Inox etc. .

To ensure that ISO 14001 does not become a "paper tiger", it also requires the management to personally exemplify the values as well as the conviction and willingness to test and utilise new technologies to reduce energy requirements. At Ryf AG, we see ISO 14001 as a continuous process. In the next few months, for example, a heat pump system will be installed in the production building, which will be supplied mainly with our own solar power. And by 2024, the warehouse and production hall will also be completely converted to energy-saving LED lighting.

Located in the «Mecca of small parts production», here in Grenchen we are also in the position to produce prototypes, small series and assemblies for customers from a wide range of industries. Important customers are the vehicle industry, mechanical engineering, the electronics industry and of course also renowned specialist companies from the watchmaking industry.

Ryf AG has been represented with a subsidiary in Commugny/VD since 2006. This has its good reasons: The innovative family-run business based in Grenchen/SO is the Swiss market leader for microscopy and optical measurement, control and testing systems. Competences that are in particular demand in the watch industry, medical technology and micromechanics. Many companies like this are traditionally located in the Arc Jurassien and the larger Geneva area. The development laboratories, research institutes and hospitals in Romandy also enjoy an excellent reputation. So it was obvious nearly twenty years ago to strengthen the presence in Romandy.

Over Fifty-Five Years of History
Founded in 1965 by Bernhard Ryf, the company has specialized in microscopy since its very beginning. It soon developed its own lighting systems. Until 1993, it continued its expansion, relocating several times to find appropriate premises. In 1999, the family-run company was joined by Daniel Ryf, the current owner and CEO. In 2006, Ryf SA opened a subsidiary in French Switzerland’s Commugny/VD to meet its growing demands. From 2007 onwards, things started to pick up even more momentum.

Renowned as it is today, Ryf SA has managed to retain its human proportions and proximity to its employees. In a family-like environment, where being close to each other also matters, Daniel Ryf, CEO, knows how important it is to invest in his team.
